Edline / Snow Days / PSSA Testing Information

EDLINE

In the next few days you should received information via the mail pertaining to procedures on how to access Edline, a program that will permit you to view your child’s grades and attendance. While this is new at Green Valley, parents have been utilizing this system at Logan and the High School. When using the system for your child’s grades, please allow a few days for the teacher to enter the grades.

As with any new program, please understand that various issues may arise, but they will be worked out ASAP. Also, if you lose your activation code, you must come into GV to obtain it or place a request in writing. No activation codes will be given over the phone.

HAITI

GREEN VALLEY CARES

HAITI RELIEF FUNDRAISER

LET’S CREATE HAITIAN FLAGS TO SUPPORT THE RELIEF EFFORTS IN HAITI

Beginning on Monday, 2-1-10, and lasting until Friday, 2-5-10, we will be selling small red and blue squares for one dollar ($1.00). These squares will be put together to make Haitian flags that will be displayed around the building. Students are encouraged to put their names on the squares to show their support. Parents are also able to purchase squares. We think this would be a great way to show our support for the relief efforts in Haiti. The money raised will either be used to buy basic care supplies (soap, toothpaste, baby wipes, etc) or will be donated directly to a reputable organization.

Please show your support and send a $1.00 in with your child next week. Thank you in advance.

Please Donate

Everyday is a new challenge in my position, either dealing with academic, social and emotional issues, or trying to be visible in both buildings so everyone knows I am around. These challenges are minor compared to the challenges of one of our first grade students, Sierra Barbarino. When I have struggles that bring me down, I think of her. I think her smile and enthusiasm. I thank her and her family for allowing me to be her principal and putting a smile on my face every time I see her.

The following was taken from a flyer that will go home to all students K-8 regarding a blood drive. If you have the time, please donate!!!

Sierra Barbarino began her complicated medical journey when she was just 3 weeks old. She spent numerous days in Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, but after a series of tests and examinations, physicians called her a “medical mystery” and sent her home to carry on a “normal” life.

After three years of extensive medical involvement, a specialist from UPMC Presbyterian performed a test that finally provided a diagnosis for Sierra: Primary Schlerosing Cholangitis (PSC). A disease that normally develops in middle-aged men, PSC constitutes a narrowing of the ducts within the liver over time. As Sierra’s liver formed, her ducts’ unusual formation prevented the bile from exiting her liver adequately, causing cirrhosis. End-stage cirrhosis and numerous other medical complications (both related and not related to the liver disease)plague Sierra. She is awaiting a liver transplant.

Now 6, Sierra is in first grade at the Green Valley Primary School and lives her daily life with a number of restrictions and numerous medications. Despite her ill fortune, this bright, beautiful, little spitfire tries to keep up with her friends. She also loves swimming, dancing, and playing piano. Sierra is the daughter of Tom and Tina Barbarino of North Versailles, Tom works at Equitable Gas as a laborer, and Tina works for Asera Care Hospice as an Intake Coordinator.

Friends and coworkers of the family have scheduled this special blood drive to help replenish the community blood supply from which Sierra has used, and will use again during her liver transplant. Please donate blood in honor of Sierra.

Central Blood Bank is the not-for-profit organization that supplies the blood products and transfusion-related services to more than 40 hospitals in western Pennsylvania, northern West Virginia, and eastern Ohio, including Children’s Hospital.

Tuesday, October 27, 2009
1:00 – 7:00
St. Robert Bellarmine Church Hall
1313 5th Avenue
North Versailles, PA

To express interest in donating blood at this drive, please log on to www.centralbloodbank.org and enter sponsor cod ZRTN0568 or call Debbie Morrell at 412-400-9000

10 Days Down

10 Days down and 170 more to go. Everyone at GV and the ELC has been extremely busy getting organized and learning over the past few weeks. I am very impressed with the work that all of our students are doing. We have some exciting events coming up, please look for the monthly calendar that will be sent home at the end of every month.

GV parents, if you are dropping of your child in the AM, we have a designated drop off location on the side of the building. Please follow the cars around the building or ask a teacher if you are not sure. Please do not drop off y our child in the front of the building or in the back by the buses. This creates an unsafe situation. AM drop off times are from 8:50-9:10

Please keep the office updated on any change in residency or phone numbers. It is imperative that we have a correct and working number for all parents/guardians.

As we all know, education is the number one priority. Along a different line, having your child remain safe while here at school is also our number one priority. I am very concerned with the safety of your child as well as the safety of all children who ride the buses to and from school. It seems like a growing number of students have forgotten the proper rules while riding on the bus. I have had to go on many of the buses and remind the children of the proper bus rules. Please review the following rules with your child:

Stay Seated, Face forward, Speak in a soft voice, Keep your hands to yourself

With everyone’s cooperation, we can make sure that all students arrive at school and go home safely. If there isn’t any improvement, I will be forced to remove various students from riding the bus and the family will be required to provide transportation to and from school.
